To control the ecto-parasites, sheep should be dipped 10-15days after shearing when they have grown sufficient new wool to hold the chemical substance and shearing wounds have healed up.
Dipping is the most efficient practices for treating sheep for skin parasites. Animals should be submerged in the dippingfluid at least 1 minute.
The head should be submerged at least 3 times.
Dip the sheep in one pen and make sure that they have wetted thoroughly, especially the neck folds and skin at back of the neck.
Dip young and healthy sheep first.
Do not place ewes and lambs in the tank simultaneously.
It is very important not to dip thirsty sheep.
Start dipping early in the morning and do not continue until late in the afternoon.
Sheep should get the opportunity to dry off sufficiently before the evening.
Watch the weather and avoid dipping if there is a possibility of rain or cold weather
There are standard designs for sheep dips (as shown in figure besides)
There are two broad classes of sheep dip: organophosphorus compounds, and synthetic pyrethroids. Malathion is one of the safest organophosphates because of its selective toxicity; it is highly toxic to insects but much less toxic to mammalian species.
Use nearly 900ml of Malathion to 100 litres of water for dipping to control ticks etc. A local Veterinarian must always be contacted before preparing the dipping solution, for safety.
